This is how it works:

START-UP MEETING

We meet live/online to get to know each other and go through the arrangements and practical details.

PRE-CONSULTATION - PRE-NATAL CONSULTATIONS

We will discuss your thoughts and wishes in a calm manner. We discuss all aspects of the preparation, birth and afterwards. If there are any concerns or fears, we work through them together. The purpose of the conversation is both for the doula to get to know you more deeply and for you to get as much good information as possible to ensure a safe and calm birth.

Among other things, we go through:

- The physiology and phases of childbirth
- Supporting the body to safety & relaxation
- Creating a safe & protected sphere
- Birthing without fear (the four tools)
- Health care procedures and your rights
- Natural pain relief methods & coping methods
- Medical pain relief methods
- Childbirth letter
- The crying phase and first moments with the baby

PRE-INTERVIEW - PRACTICAL PREPARATION

We practise the tools, pressures and exercises of Birth Without Fear. You will experience what it feels like to be guided to relaxation, receive soothing touch, massage and pressure, try out positions and practice coping techniques and tell us what feels right for you. We also practice postures and movements. Your partner will learn tools and tips to support you and find their place as a support person. We synchronize ourselves as a team around you who are about to give birth.

We also go through Active baby/spinning babies which is a method for stretching muscles and ligaments around the uterus and pelvis. The aim is to create space in the pelvis which makes it easier for the baby to rotate down the birth canal. This can contribute to a faster delivery with less pain and also alleviate pregnancy-related problems.

BACK-UP DOULA

The back-up doula is there as a safeguard in case the main doula needs to be replaced or fill in in case of illness. You will meet her on an online call, about 1 hour.

You decide who the back-up doula is together with the main doula based on suggestions you receive and after you have met her. It is important that it feels right, otherwise you will get more suggestions.

CONTACT & 24/7 DAY

You can contact the doula for questions and concerns throughout your pregnancy. It starts 10 days before your due date, so you can reach the doula 24/7, even during the night.

PRESENCE DURING CHILDBIRTH

When the birth starts, you contact the doula and let them know. The doula usually arrives when you go to the hospital or enter the active phase at home. However, if you need support earlier, the doula can come and support you at home during the latent phase.

The doula provides active support throughout the birth, such as guidance, massage, practical coordination and support in communicating with the health care system. You can read more about what support can look like further down on this page.

The doula stays until the baby and placenta are born and for a short time afterwards.

AFTERMATH

We meet in your home shortly after the birth for a final check-up. We'll talk through your experiences and wrap up together.

Frequently asked questions

It usually works very well and the doula is often a highly appreciated support for the partner as well. The partner is always the most important support but person but often the partner feels more secure in their role when they're not the only support person. It is also often good for the partner to have someone who is confident and experienced in a situation that may be new or unfamiliar to them for them to feel calm and trust the process. We form a strong support team together!

Supporting someone who is giving birth can often also take its toll in the form of fatigue and you also need to eat, drink and go to the toilet. With a doula, the partner and the doula can take turns and relieve one another to make the experience more seamless for the birthing person. They can also take a a nap if it feels urgent.

That the partner feels well and confident makes them a better support for you during the birth and they often feel more satisfied with their contribution.

Partners who are hesitant about hiring a doula usually change their minds quickly when we meet and they understand the value of it for both you and them.

It usually works very well and the midwives usually show great appreciation for us doulas. It's very clear to both us and them where each of our areas of work begins and ends and how we compliment each other.
The majority of the midwives we meet are very positive to having a doula on site because it usually results in a calmer and more positive atmosphere in the room and better experiences for those who give birth, as well as gives them some relief and let them focus mainly on the medical aspects.

We always do our utmost to create a good and warm collaboration with the midwives on site as we are all part of a team around you giving birth!

If the birth starts before the on-call doula or back-up doula anyway, it doesn't change anything else afterwards. If we are unable to attend, we help find a replacement (we have plenty of close partners with the same knowledge and focus). This happens occasionally and has never been a problem.

Yes, you can! If you feel a need for support during the latency phase at home, you can get it. You decide when you start feeling the need for support and decide when you want us to come.

If you manage well at home during early labor we recommend that we meet up a little later when you are approaching the active phase.
For hospital births, we usually recommend meeting up at the hospital or just before leaving home.
