WELCOME TO DOULABYN

Giving birth with a doula

Giving birth is a knowledge that the female body has within. When the person giving birth feels safe and undisturbed , they can relax and find their focus.

Being surrounded by people you know and trust is soothing to the nervous system and supports the release of oxytocin. It also provides access to the body's own internal pain relief system and helps the body to go through the process more smoothly.

Throughout history, women have given birth surrounded by trusted support persons providing physical and psychological support. As doulas, we are by your side throughout the birth as a safe and knowledgeable support, together with your partner or other support person.

During birth, we gently guide you to relaxation and help with pain relief, tools and techniques.

Hi, how nice that you found us!

My name is Hanna and I am the founder of Doulabyn.

I am passionate about working with families and supporting them on their journey through pregnancy and birth.

As a person, I'm warm and responsive and love working with people. I'm often described as calm and told that I am clear in my communication.

My desire to work as a doula began in a longing to work closely with people - both in conversation and working with my hands. I also have a great fascination with birth and continue to educate myself constantly - however the deepest and most important knowledge grows from being in the birthing room and witnessing women's inherent ability.

My goal is to support my clients to have the most positive and empowering experience possible. I work to create a safe and accepting atmosphere where you can fully participate in what you feel - and feel held and accepted in it, no matter what it looks like.

I am an experienced doula who has had the honor of supporting many families during a wide variety of births, in hospitals, home births and caesarean births. I have worked at all clinics in and around Stockholm, including Uppsala and Södertälje.

Support during childbirth

When the birth starts, we come and support you where you are. You decide when you need support. We stay by your side and actively support you until the baby is born.

The doula and the partner (or other support person) work together as a team, helping each other and taking turns.

What can the doula do the birth:

- Guides you into relaxation with tools from Birthing without fear
- Mental support (e.g. guides you back to focus or helps you process emotions)
- Massage and pressure
- Supports you in understanding the process and relate to each phase
- Creates a calm and cozy atmosphere in the room
- Helps you in communication with the health care
- Practical support: extra hands for everything e.g. opening windows, picking up things, fetching water, placing cold towels on your forehead and shoulders - everything you need during birth should come swiftly without having to be left alone.
- Relief for the partner so they can eat, go to the toilet and sleep if needed.

BIRTHSTORIES

I decided early in my pregnancy to hire a doula for my birth and I am extremely happy that it was Hanna.

With her support, I had a positive birth experience and as a first-time mother was able to give birth to my child without medical anesthesia, just as I wanted.

Hanna has a warm, insightful and reassuring presence that made me feel safe during our meetings and through all phases of the birth. She is extremely knowledgeable and professional and was able to accommodate all my wishes and concerns before the birth. I would highly recommend Hanna as a doula!

BIRTHSTORIES

My birth was not at all what I had imagined, but I still experienced it as incredibly simple and beautiful. It was so much more manageable than I had imagined. Looking back, I realize that it would have been traumatic if I had not had a Doula with me.

It was worth its weight in gold to have a trained support person who was 100% there for me. Hanna could also speak for me to the staff while I focused inward. When things didn't turn out the way I thought they would, such as the needing to have a vacuum extraction, Hanna was able to help me stay calm and not see it as a defeat. But she also made sure that many things turned out as I had hoped and I got a lot of physical and mental support. I would really recommend ALL births to have a doula.

BIRTHSTORIES

Congratulations to you for considering Hanna as your doula! Hanna's personality is perfect for the job. She is great at reading the mood of the room which facilitates a good interaction between you, your partner and hospital staff. I admit that I was skeptical of the doula concept at first, but I have no hesitation in giving Hanna my warmest recommendations. She's a rock.

Frequently asked questions

A doula and a partner have two different roles but we form a support team together and also help each other and take turns with certain things.

The partner is the main support person and often has more emphasis on providing love and affection and being close by. Often the mother wants her partner to be close to her face, to lean on or hang on and hold her hand.

The doula often has more emphasis on guiding relaxation and helping with pain relief and using her skills to help the mother find calm and make it feel manageable and good.

Often both the doula and the partner give massage and pressure e.g. hip press and knee press. (It can be very nice to get both hip press and massage on the shoulders during pain). We also usually take turns and change positions from time to time to keep up and get variety.

This usually makes the partner more confident:

- Having talked through everything before the birth in advance and practiced
- Understanding your role
- Having an experienced person with you to discuss your concerns
- Being able to focus on providing the support that the person giving birth wants most of all from their partner and leaving what does not feel natural
- Having time to feel how they themselves feel and take in what is happening at their own pace

Having a doula also means that the partner and the doula can relieve each other a little sometimes when someone needs to eat, drink, go to the toilet or sleep.

Nowadays, doulas are a common feature of maternity wards and it usually works very well.

The midwives are usually very appreciative of us doulas. They know that it provides a calmer and safer atmosphere in the room and a better experience for those giving birth.

We are all part of a team around you who give birth!

However, in some cases we need to stand up for our clients if the staff, for example, does not listen or makes direct violations and it can sometimes create a tension in the room. In those cases it is usually temporary and usually appreciated by the person giving birth regardless.

If the birth starts before the day starts, the doula or the back-up doula comes anyway and it doesn't change anything else afterwards.

The times it has happened so far, it has not meant any change, but if we are prevented, we solve it with someone in our contact network.

Yes!!! If you feel a need for support during the latency phase at home, you will get it.

You decide when you start to feel the need for support and when the doula should come.

However, we recommend that we meet up at home or in the hospital when you are approaching the active phase if it feels like it is working - to reduce the risk that the main doula needs to switch with the back-up doula if it is a long birth.

We can often provide support on facetime for a while in the latency phase to help you find things that work and are comfortable and make it possible to continue on your own for a while longer.

If you are independent or for some other reason know that you will probably need support even during the latent phase, we can plan for it.
