LAND SAFELY IN THE NEW LIFE

SUPPORT FROM A POSTPARTUM DOULA IN STOCKHOLM

Support in the home during the fourth trimester

The first period at home with a newborn baby can often feel overwhelming. For most people, it is an intense phase where it can be very reassuring to have company, relief and support. A postpartum doula provides support in the home in the form of calming conversations, guidance and practical support to make the transition to the new feel more smooth and calm.

A postpartum visit always starts with talking about what's needed that day in the form of mental, physical and practical support. It could also be breastfeeding support, extra hands with with the baby, taking care of older children, cooking or cleaning.

Doulabyn offers several different packages that can be booked beforehand during pregnancy or when the baby has already been born when the need arises.

Examples of what the support can consist of:

- Support in finding a rhythm and finding confidence in the new life
- Help to learn to read and understand the baby's signals and needs
- Support in calmly finding self-confidence as new parents
- Get support with physical and emotional recovery after childbirth
- Breastfeeding support
- Practical support and relief (eg. finding comfortable positions, cooking, entertaining older children)
- Extra hands and relief with the baby
- Massage (with oils from Braido organics) and connective tissue massage
- Support in finding rest, well-being and relaxation
- Company and someone to talk and share experiences with
- Relief during the night when the baby wakes up to get as much sleep as possible

Mothering the mother

After giving birth, it takes time for both the body and the mind to settle into the new. The body has been through something extremely intense and needs time to heal and rest. During this time it can be very soothing and relaxing to have the soft, caring presence of a postpartum doula at home for a few hours a day.

The doula is a safe companion that is there to support and comfort you. We are someone to discuss things with and a pair of extra hands that are there to help and look after you who have given birth so that you feel as good as possible and get as much time as possible to rest in bed and bond with the baby. We can also take care of practicalities, prepare food and snacks or a hot cup of chai, plump up with pillows during breastfeeding or give you a nice massage. If necessary, we can also look after the baby so you can sleep or rest.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of support you need during a night shift is very unique to every family. The arrangement depends on things like how the sleep is going, where you and your baby sleep and how you feed your baby.

We always start by talking through your situation and making a plan (that we might need to evaluate as we go and improve). If there is something about the nights that has been particularly challenging, we can explore it together by trial and error to find a good rhythm for the support.
The doula can, for example, sleep near your bedroom or in the same room as all of you (if you co-sleep) or in the same room as the baby so that the doula wakes up when the baby wakes up and helps to pick up the baby and bring the baby to the mother to breastfeed, or help to prepare formula. If the baby is awake for longer periods, the doula can watch the baby while you sleep.

If the doula falls ill, we will postpone the booked appointment to another date as soon as possible. The same applies if your doula is called in for a birth as births need to be given priority.

Should you feel a big need for support on the day you have booked or if your doula is ill for more than a few days, another doula will replace her.

We make a preliminary booking (without setting the exact dated) around your expected date of birth and at the end of the pregnancy we keep in touch but wait with exact days until the baby/babies have arrived. Once the baby has arrived, you call us and we can book the time and days for the first visits.

We can support you with cooking at home or preparing snacks, etc. We can either use what is available at home or you can choose to have us shop foods you like on the way there and that you pay for the cost. When we prepare food and snacks, we aim to create warming, easily digestible and nutritious food that supports the body's postpartum healing and of course what you like or crave that day.

If you wish, the doula can bring food for a daily menu for one or more days (breakfast, lunch and dinner) that is already prepared from our partner who offer homemade catering that is specialized to provide nutrition suitable for the postpartum period. You will be given suggested menus to approve in advance and we will then bring the dishes to the visits. The cost for this is not included in the package.

Booking can be made both before or after the baby's arrival.

However, if you are considering booking a postpartum doula, we encourage you to book as early as possible as this helps us to make ourselves available to you and to ensure that you get a spot in our calendar.

The exact day and time of the appointments are always booked  after the baby's arrival except in the case of a planned caesarean section or planned induction.

However, it is often possible to book even at short notice after the baby is born. Sometimes it is only when you clearly see a need for support. If we have room, we are happy to support you. Get in touch!

Our support is mainly for you who are in early postpartum, around the first 6 weeks. However, breastfeeding support can be booked throughout the breastfeeding period.
