CLOSING THE BONES

During both pregnancy and childbirth, our bodies grow and expand both physically and spiritually. After childbirth, the process of coming back and to close the body again begins. Natural functions for this are, for example postpartum contractions that contract the uterus, breastfeeding and just time.

Closing the bones is a traditional ceremony in Mexico performed by parteras, or traditional Mexican midwives. During the ceremony, the mother that has given birth lies on a bed of rebozos (Mexican shawls) which are crossed over the body. The two people performing the ceremony pull the ends of each rebozo in turn, from top to bottom, so that the shawl envelops each part of the body with a hugging and holding sensation.

Once the entire body has been 'closed' and the person giving birth has rested with the shawls wrapped and stretched over the entire body, they are then opened from the bottom up again.

You can choose if you want two doulas to perform the ceremony or if you want a doula and a family member to do it.

We prepare the room where the ceremony will be held with candles, flowers and a wool yoga mat with rebozos placed on it.

You lie down on the bed of rebozos and one person sits on each side of you and crosses the fabric over your body and gives a pleasant hugging massage, of each part of the body, from your head down to your feet. After the whole body is enveloped and hugged, you lie and rest, held by the rebozos for a while. Then the rebozos are slowly opened again from the bottom up and the ceremony ends with a body massage.
