Frequently asked questions
When the birth starts and you begin to feel the need for more support, you call the doula who comes to you and supports you actively (together with the partner) until the baby is born and often for a while afterwards during the birth of the placenta, possible suturing (stitches) and the start of breastfeeding.
During the birth, the doula and the partner together actively supports you by:
- Gently guiding you in coping techniques and breathing (Hypnobirthing/Birthing without fear)
- Giving massage and acupressure
- Giving pain-relieving counterpressure
- Giving mental support to feel safe, calm and focus.- Helping you to stay in contact with your self and trust your body.
- Suggest positions, movements and exercises that reduce pain and can help the process to move forward smoothly.
- Create a calming and inspiring Birth Space: turn off the lights, light candles, turning on music retrieve and organize the room with props and tools,
We also support you through:
- Practical support, for example: making sure that the water is warm, that the TENS electrodes are in the right place if the pain moves and possibly increase the strength, putting a cold towel on the forehead and changing it regularly, warming the wheat pillow, arranging smooth transfers. etc.
- Support in communicating with healthcare professionals to ensure that your wishes are followed as far as possible. As doulas we work actively to contribute to a clear dialoge about information on advantages/risks of different options, going through the possibility to try something in a more gentle/natural way first or to wait, etc. We can often contribute with suggestions or safe modifications to improve your experience.
It usually works very well and the doula is often a highly appreciated support for the partner as well. The partner is always the most important support but person but often the partner feels more secure in their role when they're not the only support person. It is also often good for the partner to have someone who is confident and experienced in a situation that may be new or unfamiliar to them for them to feel calm and trust the process. We form a strong support team together!
Supporting someone who is giving birth can often also take its toll in the form of fatigue and you also need to eat, drink and go to the toilet. With a doula, the partner and the doula can take turns and relieve one another to make the experience more seamless for the birthing person. They can also take a a nap if it feels urgent.
That the partner feels well and confident makes them a better support for you during the birth and they often feel more satisfied with their contribution.
Partners who are hesitant about hiring a doula usually change their minds quickly when we meet and they understand the value of it for both you and them.
It usually works very well and the midwives usually show great appreciation for us doulas. It's very clear to both us and them where each of our areas of work begins and ends and how we compliment each other.
The majority of the midwives we meet are very positive to having a doula on site because it usually results in a calmer and more positive atmosphere in the room and better experiences for those who give birth, as well as gives them some relief and let them focus mainly on the medical aspects.
We always do our utmost to create a good and warm collaboration with the midwives on site as we are all part of a team around you giving birth!
If the birth starts before the day starts, the doula or back-up doula comes anyway and it doesn't change anything else afterwards. In case of absence, we help to find a replacement (we have plenty of close partners who have the same level of knowledge and focus).
The times this has happened so far, it has not meant any change.
Yes! If you feel a need for support during the latency phase at home, we can come to your home. You decide when you start to feel the need for support and decide when you want us to come.
If you manage well at home during early labor we recommend that we meet up a little later when you are approaching the active phase.
For hospital births, we usually recommend meeting up at the hospital or just before leaving home.
